Influence of wire drawing machine die on wire drawing quality

Jan 05, 2025

How does the wire drawing machine's die affect the wire drawing quality?

The die of the wire drawing machine has a crucial influence on the quality of wire drawing.

First of all, the dimensional accuracy of the die directly determines the dimensional accuracy of the wire drawing. The aperture size inside the die is the key factor in controlling the wire diameter. If the die aperture is not accurate enough, such as there is a roundness deviation or dimensional error, then the wire diameter will be difficult to accurately control during the wire drawing process. For example, when the die aperture is slightly larger, the diameter of the wire drawn may be thinner than expected, otherwise it may be thicker. High-precision dies can ensure the consistency of wire diameter and meet the requirements of high-precision wire processing.

Secondly, the material of the mold affects the surface quality of the wire drawing. Suitable mold materials should have high hardness, high wear resistance and good thermal stability. During the wire drawing process, there is severe friction between the wire and the mold. The mold with high hardness and wear resistance can maintain the smoothness of the surface of the inner hole of the mold and prevent scratches, strains and other defects on the wire surface caused by mold wear. Moreover, good thermal stability can prevent the mold from deforming due to frictional heat during the wire drawing process, thereby ensuring the stability of the wire drawing process and the flatness of the wire surface.

Furthermore, the internal structure and shape design of the mold also have a significant impact on the drawing quality. The structural design such as the entrance angle of the mold and the lubrication groove will affect the smoothness of the material entering the mold. A reasonable entrance angle can guide the material to enter the mold evenly, reduce stress concentration, and avoid wire breakage during the drawing process. The design of the lubrication groove can store lubricant, allowing the lubricant to be evenly distributed between the wire material and the die during wire drawing, reducing friction and improving wire drawing quality. If the lubrication is poor and the friction between the wire and the mold is too large, it will not only affect the surface quality of the wire, but may also lead to excessive drawing force, which will change the internal structure of the wire and reduce the mechanical properties of the wire.

Finally, the service life of the die is also closely related to the quality of wire drawing. As the number of times the die is used increases, the die will gradually wear out. When the die is worn to a certain extent, the quality of wire drawing will be significantly reduced, such as increased wire diameter deviation and increased surface roughness. Therefore, regular replacement or maintenance of the die to ensure that the die works in good condition is an important measure to ensure stable wire drawing quality.
